The Lodge at Torrey Pines – A Unique Resort with High Standards & Exceptional Service

Tiger Woods recently won the 2008 PGA Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, CA. If you missed seeing him play at this annual tournament in the San Diego area, don’t fret, because he will be back for the 2008 U.S. Open ( at the same course from June 12-15. The fine people at The Lodge at Torrey Pines couldn’t be happier about the extra event this year (arguably the most prestigious tournament of the year). In December, I stayed at The Lodge for the first time. When I pulled into the valet I was greeted by doormen outfitted in kilted Scottish dress. The Lodge’s grand porte cochère (as they like to call it) was filled with the magic of a quartet of spectacular holiday carolers. I had heard plenty of great things about this property, but at this distinct point in my trip, I realized I was in for something very special. The Lodge, opened six years ago and designed in the California Craftsman style of the early 1900s, has 171 rooms, and boasts of the San Diego area’s only Mobile Five Diamond designation for resorts. I arrived at night, and the next morning when I looked out the window of my room, I was literally stunned by the breathtaking scenery. I was on the fifth floor overlooking the golf course and the ocean; there is really nothing quite like this unique view. The staff was professional and cordial, and I received consistent service throughout the entire property. The same incredible effort that goes into every other detail of the resort, is also poured into their restaurants. The Lodge’s top restaurant, A.R. Valentien (named after one of San Diego’s most famous artists, an Impressionist from the early 1900s.), was also a distinct treat. The California cuisine, based on fresh, local ingredients, was complemented by warm, sophisticated service. For golf enthusiasts, The Lodge offers their guests guaranteed tee times and special packages. I did not have time to enjoy the spa, but it is a world-class, 9,500 square-foot facility with 14 treatment rooms and an extensive menu of services and activities. The Lodge at Torrey Pines is truly a very special place.
